On November 22, 1858, Gen. William Larimer, a land speculator from eastern Kansas, placed cottonwood sticks on the hill overlooking the confluence of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek to stake a claim at the center of a square-mile town plat. Now, 150 years later, Denver is the 21st largest metropolitan area in the United States. The City and County of Denver is celebrating its sesquicentennial with a legacy project, the Denver Daisy; recognition of 150 people making Denver a better place; and a two-week celebration in November called 15 Days, 150 Years. |

Balanced Budget Focuses on Community Priorities and Ongoing Operational Efficiencies
Denver—Released on October 15, 2007, the Mayor's Proposed 2008 Budget for the City and County of Denver is now online at www.denvergov.org/budget. The files of the proposed budget are searchable.
This is the formal proposal by the Mayor; the earlier September book was a draft. The Mayor and City Council held departmental budget briefings beginning in mid-September. Based on input during this review period, the Mayor submit this recommended budget today. A public hearing will be held on October 22. City Council will adopt a budget by November 12 and must enact an ordinance making FY 2008 appropriations by November 26, 2007.
